acid drainage a type of mining pollution that occurs when oxygen and rain water react with newly exposed rock that contains iron sulfide, forming sulfuric acid that removes metals from rocks and leaches into groundwater or enters water bodies as runoff
active solar heating the use of technology to collect store or use the suns energy
adaptation an heritable trait that increases the likelihood of an individual's survival and reproduction
adaptive manegment a customized approaches to managing resources that has been developed through scientific testing
age structure the relative number of organisams of each age within a population also called age distrebution
age structure diagram a chart that shows the agedistribution and population ,also called the age pyramid
air mass a large body of air in which properties such as temperature, pressure, and humility are similar.
air pollution the release of damage materials into the atmosphere
air pressure the force exerted by air on the area below it also called apnosphere pressure
algal bloom the rapid growth of algae in an area that can cover the surface of the water and block sunlight from reaching plants below
aphotic zone the layer below the photic zone in an aquatic ecosystem were no sunlight penatraits so photosynthesis cannot occur
aquaculture the raising of aquatic organisms for food in a controlled environment, also called fish farming.
aquifer a sponglike formation of rock, sand or gravel that hold water
arableland land that is suitable for farming
artificial selection A human controlled prosses to produce individuals with certain traits
asbestos a mineral that form long thin microscopic fibers used as and inculiator againts heat and sound
atmposphere the thin layer of gases that surround the earth
atom the basic unit of matter the smallest unit that maintains the chemical properties of an element
avalanche the rapid movement of snow sliding down a slope
biogeochemincal cycle the circulation of nutriants through the atmosphere, also called nutriant cycle
biological pest controll the use of organisms to battle pest and weed
biomagnification the increased consentraition of pollutians at each step up a food chain
biomass the total amount of a living tissue in a trophic level
biomass energy the energy produced from organic materials (e.g. plants and human wastes e.g.)
biome a grouping of ecosystems with similer and biotic and a biotic condition
biopower electricity generated by the comution of organic materials
biosphere the earth and all of its organisms and environments
biotechnology the use of genetic engineering to increase the value of products
biotic factor any part of an ecosystem that is living or used to be living
biotic potential the growth rate of a population under ideal conditions
canopy the dense covering of trees, 50 to 80 meeters above the ground in a rainforest
cap-a-trade a system the u.s. government uses first to determine an acceptable amount of a specific pollutant and then assign (vie perments) a fraction of that amount to industrial sources of that pollutant
captive breeeding the process of breeding and raising organisms under controlled conditions
carbohydrate an organic compound that consists of atoms of carbon , hydrogen, and oxygen
carbon footprint the total carbon dioxide I'm missions produced by an individual group or location
carbon offset a voluntary payment made to conpensate for greenhouse gas edmision
carbon sequestration a method of storing carbon emissions to prevent their release into the aptmosphere
carbon tax a fee that the government charges polluters for each unit of greenhouse gas the emit
carcinogin a chemical that causes cancer
