topography the shape and size of the land features on
topography map shows the shape of Earth’s surface with lines that represent the different elevations
contour lines are lines that connect points that are of the same elevation.
contour interval is the difference in elevation between two contour lines that are side by side.
map scale compares distances on the map with distances on earth.
legend explains symbols used on the map.
benchmark is a point where exact elevation is known and is marked with a brass or aluminum plate. It is marked BM on the map with the elevation numbers given in feet.
hatchure lines are regular contour lines with small segments sticking out from it.
index contours contour lines that are labeled to help you find the contour interval. In bold
Vs at the stream v points the way the streams flowing
elevation a location's height above or below a reference point, most commonly mean sea level.
relief a physical map that illustrates the shape and elevation of the land using visual or physical techniques.
profile a side view of geographical data, which focuses on elevation.
gentle slope characterized by being widely spaced because they connect points of similar elevation.
steep slope characterized by being closely spaced because they indicate a rapid change in elevation.
