Topography

QuestionAnswer
Topography the shape and size of the land features on Earth
Topographic/Countour map Shows the shape of Earth's surface with lines that represent the different elevations, also identifies natural structures and structures made by man.
Contour lines Lines that connect points that are of the same elevation. Show exact elevation, the shape of the land, and the steepness of the land's slope. Never touch or cross. Dark lines represent every fifth.
Gentle slope The contour lines are far apart and spread out
Steep slope The contour lines are close together
Index contour lines Contour lines that are labeled to help you find the contour interval. In bold.
V's at the stream Contour lines form V's that point upstream when they cross a stream. They point in the opposite direction as the flow of water.
Contour intervals the difference in elevation between two contour lines that are side by side. A contour interval is not the distance between the two lines- to get the distance you need to use the map scale.
Map scale Compares distances on the map with distances on Earth.
Legend Explains symbols used on the map.
Benchmark a point where exact elevation is known and is marked with a brass or aluminum plate. It is marked BM on the map with the elevation numbers given in feet. They are useful to help determine contour lines.
Hachure lines. Regular contour lines with small segments sticking out from it. The first hachure line is at the same elevation as the contour line before it.
Elevation How high and low the ground is in relation to sea level.
Relief the variations in elevation across a landscape, such as the difference between the highest and lowest points, or the overall ruggedness of the land surface
Profile a two-dimensional, side-view drawing that shows the elevation and shape of the land surface along a specific line drawn on a topographic map
