topography
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| topography | a detailed description or representation on a map of the natural and artificial features of an area. |
| topographic/contour map | a map that uses special lines called contour lines to show the shape, elevation, and steepness of the Earth's surface. |
| contour lines | imaginary lines on a map that connect points of equal elevation |
| steep slope | imaginary lines on a map that connect points of equal elevation (a steep hill or mountain) |
| gentle slope | a gradual incline, or rise in elevation, that requires a long horizontal distance to gain a small amount of height. (not a steep hill or mountain, more like a ramp) |
| index contour lines | a prominent, thicker, and labeled contour line on a topographic map that shows a specific elevation, |
| V's at the stream | the "Vs" you see where contour lines cross a stream, known as the Rule of Vs, always point upstream. (point upstream so water is moving down hill) (upstream is the top of the mountain) |
| contour intervals | the vertical distance in elevation between any two adjacent contour lines on a topographic map. (the lines which you count) |
| map scale | the ratio between the distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the ground it represents. |
| legend | a key or guide that explains the symbols, colors, or patterns used in a map, chart, or graph to represent data, |
| benchmark | a physical marker or a precisely noted location on the map with a known, fixed elevation above sea level. (metal plate on the ground to mark a spot) |
| hachure lines | short, parallel lines on a map that indicate the direction and steepness of a slope. (little lines inside of the contour lines which shows a differet slope) |
| elevation | height above a given level, especially sea level. |
| relief | the general shape of the Earth's surface, including variations in elevation like hills, valleys, and mountains (high relief=steep low relief=flat landscape) |
| profile | s a summary of characteristics or data used to analyze, describe, or understand a particular subject. |
