Topography The arrangement of natural and artificial physical features of an area.
Topographic/Contour Map A map that uses contour lines to show elevation and the shape of the
Contour Lines Lines on a map that connect points of equal elevation.
Gentle Slope A slope where contour lines are spaced far apart, indicating a gradual change in elevation.
Steep Slope A slope where contour lines are close together, showing a rapid change in elevation.
Index Contour Lines Thicker contour lines labeled with elevation, appearing every fifth line for easy reading.
V’s at the Stream Contour lines form a "V" shape that points upstream when crossing a river or stream.
Contour Intervals The vertical distance or difference in elevation between adjacent contour lines.
Map Scale A ratio that shows the relationship between distances on a map and the actual distances on the ground.
Legend A key that explains the symbols, colors, and lines used on a map.
Benchmark A point whose exact elevation is known and marked, often with a brass plate.
Hachure Lines Short lines inside a contour that indicate a depression or hole in the ground.
Elevation The height of a point above sea level.
Relief The difference in elevation between the highest and lowest points in an area.
Profile A side view or cross-section of the land's surface along a specific line.
