topography

TermDefinition
topographic map Map describing the physical features of a geographical area.
contour lines lines that connect points that are of the same elevation.
contour interval the difference in elevation between two contour lines that are side by side.
Topography the shape and size of the land features on Earth Topographic map
steep slope when the contour lines are close together
gentle slope when the contour line are far apart.
index contour lines a thicker, bold line on a topographic map that represents a specific elevation and is labeled with that elevation value
V's they point upstream when they cross a stream.
Map scale compares distances on the map with distances on earth.
legend explains symbols used on the map.
benchmark a point where exact elevation is known and is marked with a brass or aluminum plate. It is marked BM on the map with the elevation numbers given in feet.
Hachure lines are regular contour lines with small segments sticking out from it.
elevation how high and low the ground is in relation to sea level.
relief the variation in elevation and shape of the Earth's surface
profile cross-sectional view of the Earth's surface along a specific line on a topographic map
