topography
| Term | Definition |

| topographic map | Map describing the physical features of a geographical area. |
| contour lines | lines that connect points that are of the same elevation. |
| contour interval | the difference in elevation between two contour lines that are side by side. |
| Topography | the shape and size of the land features on Earth Topographic map |
| steep slope | when the contour lines are close together |
| gentle slope | when the contour line are far apart. |
| index contour lines | a thicker, bold line on a topographic map that represents a specific elevation and is labeled with that elevation value |
| V's | they point upstream when they cross a stream. |
| Map scale | compares distances on the map with distances on earth. |
| legend | explains symbols used on the map. |
| benchmark | a point where exact elevation is known and is marked with a brass or aluminum plate. It is marked BM on the map with the elevation numbers given in feet. |
| Hachure lines | are regular contour lines with small segments sticking out from it. |
| elevation | how high and low the ground is in relation to sea level. |
| relief | the variation in elevation and shape of the Earth's surface |
| profile | cross-sectional view of the Earth's surface along a specific line on a topographic map |
