| topography | the shape and size of the land features on earth |
| contour map | shows the shape of earth surface with lines that represent the different elevations |
| contour lines | lines that connect points that are of the same elevation |
| contour intervals | difference in elevation between two contour lines that are side by side |
| map scale | compares distances on the map with distances on earth |
| Legend | explains symptoms used on the map |
| index contour lines | contour lines that are labeled to help you find the contour interval |
| benchmark | a point where exact elevation is known and is marked with a brass or aluminum plate |
| hachure lines | regular contour lines with small segments sticking out from it |
| elevation | how high and low the ground is in relation to sea level |
| gentle slope | contour lines that are far apart |
| steep slope | contour lines that are close together |
| v at the stream | contour lines indicate a valley or stream. |
| relief | the range to elevation on a topographic map |
| profile | a cross sectional view of the land surface along a specific line on a topographic map |
