topography

TermDefinition
Topography The shape and features of the Earth's surface, including mountains, valleys, plains, and bodies of water. It describes the physical layout of the land.
Topographic/Contour Map A type of map that shows elevation and landform shapes using contour lines. It gives a 3D sense of the terrain on a 2D surface.
Contour Lines Lines on a topographic map that connect points of equal elevation. They show the height of the land above sea level and the shape of the land features.
Gentle Slope A slope where the land rises or falls gradually. On a map, contour lines are spaced far apart.
Steep Slope A sharp rise or drop in elevation over a short distance. On a map, contour lines are very close together.
Index Contour Lines Thicker or darker contour lines that are usually labeled with the elevation. They appear every 4th or 5th line and help make reading the map easier.
V’s at the Stream When contour lines form a “V” shape, it points upstream (against the flow of the water). This shows the presence of a river or stream in a valley.
Contour Intervals The difference in elevation between one contour line and the next. It’s the amount the land goes up or down between lines.
Map Scale Shows the ratio between distances on the map and real-life distances (e.g., 1 cm
Legend Also called a key, it explains the symbols, colors, and lines used on a map so you can understand what they represent.
Benchmark A marked point of known elevation, often indicated with a symbol and elevation value. It’s used as a reference point for mapping.
Hachure Lines Short lines used on a contour map to show depressions or holes (areas that go down in elevation). The lines point inward toward the lower elevation.
Elevation The height of the land above sea level. It can be measured in meters or feet.
Relief The difference between the highest and lowest elevation in a particular area. It shows how flat or rugged the land is.
Profile A side view or cross-sectional drawing that shows the shape of the land along a line drawn on a map. It helps visualize hills, valleys, and slopes.
