Topographic maps

QuestionAnswer
Topography The shape and size of the land features on Earth
Topographic map/contour map Shows the shape of Earth's surface with lines that represent the different elevations
Contour lines Lines that connect points that are of the same elevation
Index contour lines Darker or wider contour lines labeled with the elevation. Usually every 5th line on USGS maps.
V's at the stream Point upstream when they cross a stream, normally caused by erosion
contour intervals The difference in elevation between 2 contour lines that are side by side
Map scale Compares distances on the map with distances on Earth
legend Explains symbols used on the map
benchmark A point where an exact elevation is known and marked with a brass or aluminum plate.
hachure lines Regular contour lines with small segments sticking out from it indicating that there is a depression
Elevation Vertical distance of a point or object on the surface, stated in distance above sea-level
Relief Vertical elevation differences in a specific region( difference between the highest and lowest elevations in a given area
Profile the cross-sectional (side) view of a piece of land
