Topographic maps
| Question | Answer |

| Topography | The shape and size of the land features on Earth |
| Topographic map/contour map | Shows the shape of Earth's surface with lines that represent the different elevations |
| Contour lines | Lines that connect points that are of the same elevation |
| Index contour lines | Darker or wider contour lines labeled with the elevation. Usually every 5th line on USGS maps. |
| V's at the stream | Point upstream when they cross a stream, normally caused by erosion |
| contour intervals | The difference in elevation between 2 contour lines that are side by side |
| Map scale | Compares distances on the map with distances on Earth |
| legend | Explains symbols used on the map |
| benchmark | A point where an exact elevation is known and marked with a brass or aluminum plate. |
| hachure lines | Regular contour lines with small segments sticking out from it indicating that there is a depression |
| Elevation | Vertical distance of a point or object on the surface, stated in distance above sea-level |
| Relief | Vertical elevation differences in a specific region( difference between the highest and lowest elevations in a given area |
| Profile | the cross-sectional (side) view of a piece of land |
