Topography

TermDefinition
Topography The shape size of the land features on Earth
Contour lines -gentle slope -steep slope They are the lines that connect points that are of the same elevation. Gentle slopes are when lines are more apart, steep slopes are closer lines to make more of a incline.
Index contour lines A darker line that represent every fifth contour line it make reading them easier.
V's at the stream Contour lines form V's that point upstream when they cross a stream. The opposite direction of the V's point is were the water is flowing
Contour intervals Is the difference in elevation between two contour lines that are side by side. Contour interval is not the distance between the two lines
Map scale Compares distances on the map with distances on Earth.
Legend The Legend explains symbols used on the map
Benchmark A benchmark is a point where the exact elevation is known and is marked with a brass or aluminum plate. Is BM is how its marked on a map.
Hachure lines They are regular contour lines with small segments sticking out from it. A depression, such as the inside of a dead volcano is represented by hachure lines.
Elevation Elevation is how high and low the ground is in relation to sea level.

contour map This shows the shape of the Earth's surface with lines that represent the different elevations.
