Anterior toward the front of the body
Posterior toward the back of the body
Superior above/toward the head of the body
Inferior below/toward the feet
Medial toward the midline of the body
Lateral away from the midline
Proximal closer to the point of attachment or origin of a limb or structure
Distal father from the point of attachment or origin of a limb or structure
Coronal/Frontal Plane a vertical plane that divides the body into front (anterior) and back (posterior) sections
Sagittal Plane a vertical plane that divides the body into equal left and right halves
Axial/Transverse Plane a horizontal plane that divides the body into upper (superior) and lower (inferior) parts
Dorsal Cavity one of the main body cavities located along the back (posterior) side of the body; includes the cranial cavity
Ventral Cavity a major body cavity located on the front (anterior) side of the body, opposite the dorsal cavity, includes thoracic cavity
Cranial Cavity a subdivision of the dorsal cavity; includes the brain, pituitary gland, and meninges
Vertebral Cavity also called spinal cavity; is a subdivision of the dorsal cavity; located within the spine; includes spinal nerves and meninges
Thoracic Cavity a subdivision of the ventral (anterior) cavity, located in the chest region; includes lungs, heart, esophagus, and trachea
Pelvic Cavity a subdivision of the abdominopelvic cavity, which is part of the ventral (anterior) cavity; includes urinary bladder, internal reproductive organs, and rectum
Abdominal Cavity a subdivision of the abdominopelvic cavity, which is part of the ventral (anterior) cavity; includes liver, spleen, stomach, pancreas, small intestine, most of the large intestine (except rectum), gallbladder, and portions of the kidneys & adrenal glands
