| matter | All material in the universe that has mass and occupies space |
| atoms | the basic units of matter |
| element | a chemical substance with a given set of properties that cannot be broken down into other properties. |
| nucleus | central core containing particles called protons and neutrons. |
| molecule | a combination of two or more atoms of the same type or different types joined by covalent bonds |
| compound | a substance composed of two or more different elements |
| hydrocarbons | organic compounds containing only oxygen and hydrogen |
| solution | a mixture in which all substances are evenly distributed |
| macromolecules | Proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids are called this because of their large size |
| Proteins | organic compounds made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sometimes sulfur |
| Nucleic Acids | macromolecules that direct protein production |
| Carbohydrates | polymers that consist of of atoms |
| lipids | macromolecules classified together because they do not dissolve in water |
| Ph | acidity or alkaline levels |
| feedback loop | an effect or output in the same system, can be either negative or positive |
| erosion | the removal of soil by water,ice,wind or gravity |
| geosphere | is made of all the rock at and below the Earth's surface |
| litho-sphere | the hard rock on and just below the Earth's surface |
| biosphere | consists of all the planets once living or all living things |
| atmosphere | layers of glasses surrounding our planet |
| hydrosphere | encompasses layers of gases surrounding our planet |
