Anterior Toward the front of the body
Posterior toward the back of the body
Superior close to the head
Inferior away from the head
medial closer to the body's mid line
Lateral away from the body's mid line
proximal closer to the center
distal Away from the trunk
coronal/frontal plane divides into anterior and posterior portions
sagittal plane divides into anterior and left sections
axial/transverse plane divides into upper and lower parts
Dorsal Cavity protects the central nervous system
Ventral Cavity the front (anterior) body cavity that holds most of the body’s internal organs
Cranial cavity Brain
Vertebral Cavity spinal cord
Thoracic cavity lungs, heart, esophagus, trachea, and major blood vessels
Pelvic cavity digestive organs, kidneys, bladder, and reproductive organs
Abdominal cavity stomach, liver, intestines, kidneys
