Poetry Terms

QuestionAnswer
Poetry Written or spoken work meant to convey strong feelings and ideas through style, rhythm, and structure.
Stanza A grouping of lines in a poem.
Poet Someone who writes or recites poetry.
Poetic Devices The tools and techniques authors use to capture emotions and express ideas.
Imagery literal or figurative language that creates a picture in the reader’s mind or conveys one of the five senses.
Rhyme A pattern of word sounds that adds a rhythm and beat to the poem.
Point of View Who or what is speaking in the poem; the perspective.
Sound Device Noise patterns or emphasis on syllables and specific letters.
Alliteration A type of sound device where the beginning sounds of words repeat, like "sally sells sea shells by the sea shore."
Allusion n. / Allude v. A reference to something; to bring something to mind without saying it explicitly.
figurative language language used for descriptive effect. language goes beyond literal meanings.
Simile using “like” or “as” to compare two unlike things.
Metaphor comparing two unlike things without using “like” or “as.” In a metaphor, one thing becomes another.
Personification giving human-like qualities to animals, objects, forces of nature, or ideas.
Hyperbole An exaggeration for dramatic effect.
