| Poet | Someone who writes or recites poetry. |
| Poetic Devices | The tools and techniques authors use to capture emotions and express ideas. |
| Imagery | literal or figurative language that creates a picture in the reader’s mind or conveys one of the five senses. |
| Rhyme | A pattern of word sounds that adds a rhythm and beat to the poem. |
| Point of View | Who or what is speaking in the poem; the perspective. |
| Sound Device | Noise patterns or emphasis on syllables and specific letters. |
| Alliteration | A type of sound device where the beginning sounds of words repeat, like "sally sells sea shells by the sea shore." |
| Allusion n. / Allude v. | A reference to something; to bring something to mind without saying it explicitly. |
| figurative language | language used for descriptive effect. language goes beyond literal meanings. |
| Simile | using “like” or “as” to compare two unlike things. |
| Metaphor | comparing two unlike things without using “like” or “as.” In a metaphor, one thing becomes another. |
