ENV: Ecology

TermDefinition
Ecosystem A community of living things (plants; animals; microbes) interacting with each other and their non-living environment (air; water; soil).
Abiotic factor A non-living part of an ecosystem such as sunlight; temperature; water; or soil.
Species A group of organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring.
Organism Any individual living thing like a plant; animal; fungus; or bacteria.
Population All the individuals of the same species living in a specific area.
Photosynthesis The process by which plants and some other organisms use sunlight to make food (glucose) from carbon dioxide and water.
Producer An organism like a plant or algae that makes its own food through photosynthesis.
Decomposer An organism like fungi or bacteria that breaks down dead plants and animals and recycles nutrients back into the environment.
Cellular respiration The process by which living things break down food (glucose) to release energy.
Food chain A simple sequence showing how energy and nutrients flow from one organism to another through eating.
Food web A network of many connected food chains showing how different organisms eat and are eaten.
Trophic level A step or level in a food chain or web (e.g. producers; herbivores; carnivores).
Primary succession Ecological succession that starts in places where no life existed before like after a volcanic eruption.
Secondary succession Ecological succession that happens in an area where an ecosystem once existed but was disturbed like after a forest fire.
Pioneer species The first organisms (like mosses or lichens) to grow in a new or disturbed area during succession.
Climax community A stable mature ecosystem with little change in species over time reached at the end of succession.
Carbon cycle The movement of carbon through living things; the atmosphere; oceans; and the Earth.
Nitrogen cycle The process that moves nitrogen through the environment including bacteria turning nitrogen into forms plants can use.
Phosphorous cycle The movement of phosphorus through rocks; water; soil; and living things.
Ecological succession The natural gradual change in an ecosystem’s plants and animals over time.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
