Directional terms

anterior toward the front of the body

superior close to the head
inferior away from the head
medial closer to the body's midline

proximal closer to the trunk
distal away from the trunk
coronal/frontal plane longitudinal plane through a body(divides interior and posterior portions)
sagittal plane longitudinal plane through a body(divides right and left sections)
axial/transverse plane horizontal plane through a body
Dorsal cavity Cranial cavity, vertebral cavity, and lower parts
Ventral cavity contains the special column
Thoracic cavity contains the lungs, hearts, blood vessels,thymus gland, and breast tissue
Pelvic cavity contains bladder, large intestine,rectum, and reproductive organs
Abdominal cavity contains stomach, large intestine,gallbladder, and kidneys
