TermDefinition
matter All material in the universe that has mass and occupies space is called matter.
atom are the basic units of matter.
element is a chemical substance with a given set of properties that cannot be broken down into substances with other properties.
nucleus or central core, containing particles called protons and neutrons.
molecule is a combination of two or more atoms of the same type or of different types joined by covalent bonds.
compound water is a compound made up of two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom so it is represented by the chemical formula
hydrocarbon are organic compounds containing only hydrogen and carbon.
solution a mixture in which all the ingredients are evenly distributed is called a solution.
macromolecule proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids are called macromolecules.
protein are polymers that serve many functions in organisms.
nucleic acid are macromolecules that direct protein production.
carbohydrate are polymers that consist of atoms of carbon,hydrogen, and oxygen.
lipid are a chemically diverse group of macromolecules that are classified together because they do not dissolve in water
pH the acidity or alkalinity of a solution is described by pH.
feedback loop sometimes an event is both a caused , or input, and an effect, or output, in the same system, a cyclical process called a feedback loop.
erosion rather than stabilizing a system, they drive it toward a extreem erosion.
lithosphere is the hard rock on and just below Earth's surface
biosphere consists of all the layers of gases surrounding earth
atmosphere consists of the layers of gases surrounding our planet
hydrosphere ecompasses all water salt, fresh, liquid, ice, and vapor
geosphere is made of the rock at and below Earth's surface
