| central idea | The main point an author makes in a nonfiction text (or a section of a nonfiction text) |
| theme | A universal message that can apply to real life or other stories. |
| setting | The time and place where a story takes place. |
| plot | The events of a story. |
| conflict | The struggle between two opposing forces in a story Can be between two characters, or inside one character struggling with a particular problem Characters can face both external and internal struggles |
| resolution | How the conflict is solved in a story; the ending of a story. |
| claim | An opinion or idea supported by evidence throughout the body of an essay or paragraph; sometimes called the thesis |
| thesis | The big answer to the prompt at an essay level; comprised of claims |
| relevant evidence | Evidence that supports a claim |
| speaker | The narrator of a poem |
| line | In a poem, a group of words arranged in a row |
| line break | In a poem, the end of one line and the start of the next |
| stanza | In a poem, a group of lines that are set off from other groups by a space |
| stanza break | In a poem, the end of one stanza and the start of the next |
| tone | The speaker's attitude toward a topic; in nonfiction, this may be the author's attitude |
| introductory paragraph | The first paragraph in an essay that introduces the essay topic and states the thesis |
| concluding paragraph | The final paragraph in an essay that restates the thesis and summarizes the essay’s key ideas |
