Cell Processes

QuestionAnswer
What is the goal of mitosis? To make genetically identical daughter cells.
What is the goal or meiosis? To make genetically different daughter cells.
Define osmosis. When water crosses a semi-permeable membrane to reach a state of equilibrium.
How is diffusion different than osmosis? 1. Osmosis is water moving, diffusion can be other things (air freshener, drink mix, etc.) 2. Osmosis needs to have a membrane, diffusion does not
How is cellular respiration different from photosynthesis? Cellular respiration turns the form of energy made during photosynthesis (glucose) into a form of energy the cell can use (ATP)
What do chloroplasts do? They take light energy from the sun and convert it into the chemical energy stored in glucose.
In which organelle does photosynthesis take place? The chloroplast
True or false: plants perform both photosynthesis and cellular respiration True
True or false: the products of photosynthesis are the same as the reactants of cellular respiration True
What happens during the process of cellular respiration? Cells take food in the form of glucose and break it down to release energy in the form of ATP
Define dependent variable. The thing being measured in a scientific investigation
What are the reactants of photosynthesis? Water, carbon dioxide and sunlight
What are the products of photosynthesis? Oxygen and glucose (sugar)
What are the reactants of cellular respiration? Oxygen and glucose (sugar)
What are the products of cellular respiration? Carbon Dioxide and Water
In which organelle does cellular respiration take place? The mitochondria
What is located in the chloroplast and helps it perform photosynthesis? Chlorophyll
How do cellular respiration and photosynthesis form a "mini" carbon cycle? Carbon dioxide the animals breath out after cell respiration is absorbed by plants during photosynthesis
Chlorophyll absorbs all light colors except _____, which is reflected. Green
Where do cells get the glucose to complete cell respiration? Plant cells: from photosynthesis Animal Cells: from food
What chemical captures energy from the sun in photosynthesis? Chlorophyll
What gas is absorbed by plants during photosynthesis and given off by animals during cell respiration? Carbon Dioxide
In which phase of mitosis do the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell? Metaphase
In which phase of mitosis do spindle fibers pull chromosomes away (or apart) from each other? Anaphase
In which phase of mitosis do two nuclei form? Telophase
In which phase of mitosis do chromosomes appear? Prophase

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
