Directional Terms

TermDefinition
Anterior toward front of the body
Posterior toward the back of the body
Superior close to the head
Inferior away from the head
Medial closer to the body's midline
Lateral away from the body's midline
Proximal closer to the trunk ( torso)
Distal away from the trunk (torso)
Coronal/Frontal Plane divides into anterior and posterior portions
Sagittal Plane divides into right and left sections
Axial/Transverse plane divides into upper and lower parts
Dorsal Cavity (Cavities it Includes) Cranial Cavity (brain) and Vertebral Cavity (contains spinal column). Has key components of central nervous systems and includes meninges which are tissue surrounding brain and spinal cord to protect.
Ventral Cavity (Cavities it Includes) rib rage, heart and lungs,
Cranial Cavity(structure it Includes) the brain, the brains protective coverings meninges which are tissues which surround brain and spinal cord
Vertebral Cavity (structure it Includes) Spinal Column
Thoracic cavity (organs it Includes) contains the lungs, heart, blood vessels, thymus gland and breast tissue
Pelvic cavity (organs it Includes) contains the bladder, large intestine, rectum, and reproductive organs
Abdominal cavity (organs it Includes) contains the stomach, gallbladder, liver, colon, small intestine, kidneys and appendix
