CLINICAL CARE - Directional Terms

anterior front of the body
posterior back of the body
superior closer to the head
inferior further from the head
medial towards the midline of the body
lateral away from the midline of the body
proximal closer to the trunk
distal away from the trunk
coronal/frontal plane divides the body into anterior and posterior
sagittal plane divides the body into left and right sections
axial/transverse divides the body into upper and lower parts
dorsal cavity a posterior cavity that holds the cranial cavity and the vertebral cavity
ventral cavity an anterior cavity that holds thoracic, mediastinum, pericardial, pleural, abdominal, and pelvic cavity.
cranial cavity holds the brain. made with the frontal, ethmoid, spheroid, temporal, parietal, and occipital bones. is also divided into three fossae; anterior, middle, and posterior.
vertebral cavity contains the spine.
thoracic cavity contains the heart, lungs, blood vessels, thymus gland, and breast tissue
pelvic cavity contains the bladder, large intestine, rectum and reproductive organs
abdominal cavity contains the stomach, gallbladder, liver, colon, small intestine, kidneys, and appendix.
