| crust | The thin layer of relatively coll rock that forms Earths outer skin both dry land and in the ocean |
| mantle | The layer of very hot but mostly solid rock |
| core | The lower mantle of earth |
| tectonic plates | The Asthenosphere moved, it drags along large plates of lithosphere . |
| landforms | Above and beneath the oceans surface |
| deposition | The depositing of eroded soil at a new location |
| evaporation | The conversion of a substance from a liquid to a gas |
| transpiration | The release of water vapor by plants through their leaves |
| precipitation | The atmosphere to Earths surface such as rain and snow |
| condensation | The change in a state from gas to a liquid |
| aquifers | The surface water that soaks down through soil and rock to recharge underground reservoirs or storage areas |
| groundwater | The fresh water found underground |
| law of conservation | The amount of matter in the environment stays the same as it flows through matter cycles |
| nutrients | The matter that organisms require for their life processes |
| biogeochemical cycles | The nutrients circulate endlessly throughout the environment in complex cycles. |
| primary producers | The organisms including plants and algae that produce their own food |
| photosynthesis | The producers pull carbon dioxide out of their environment and combine it with water in the presence of sunlight |
| consumers | The organisms,mainly animals,must eat other organisms to obtain nutrients |
| decomposers | The organisms such as bacteria and fungi that break down water and dead organisms |
| cellular respiration | The process by which organisms use oxygen to release the chemical energy of sugars and release |
| eutrophication | the addition of phosphorus to bodies of water can lead to an overgrowth of producers |
| nitrogen fixation | the conversion of nitrogen gas into ammonia |
