TermDefinition
Matter All the material in the universe that has mass and occupies space.
atoms are the basic units of matter .
element a chemical substance with a given set of properties that cannot be broken down into substances with other properties .
nucleus the central and most important part of an object ,movement, or group forming the basis for its activity and growth.
molecule a combination of two or more atoms of the same type or different types of of different types joined by covalent bonds.
compound A substance composed of atoms of two or more different element .
Hydrocarbons Organic compounds containing only hydrogen and carbon .
solution A mixture in which all the ingredients are evenly distributed .
macromolecules Proteins ,nucleic acids , carbohydrates , and lipids .
proteins polymers that's serve many functions in organisms.
Nucleic Acids macromolecules that direct protein production .
Carbohydrates polymers that consist of atoms of carbon, hydrogen ,and oxygen .
Lipids a chemically diverse group of macromolecules that are classified together because they do not dissolve in water .
pH The acidity or alkalinity of a solution .
feedback loop a cause,or input,and an effect, or output , in the same system , a cyclical process .
Erosion The removal of soil by water ,wind,ice, or gravity ,lead to a positive feedback loop.
geosphere made of all the rock at and below Earths surface .
lithosphere The hard rock on and just below Earths surface -The outermost layer of the geosphere .
biosphere consists of all the planets living or once living things and the nonliving parts of the environment.
atmosphere The layer of gases surrounding our planet .
hydrosphere Encompasses all water -salt,fresh,liquid,ice and vapor - on Earth's surface,underground .
