Lesson 3 and 4
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Crust | The thin layer of rock that forms earth outer surface on land and in the ocean |
| mantle | A layer of very hot but mostly solid rock |
| core | Earths outer core is made of molten metals such as iron and nickel that are almost as hot as the surface of the sun |
| tectonic | As the asthenosphere moves ,it drags along large plates of lithosphere called tectonic plates |
| landform | These collisions and separations of plates result in landforms |
| deposition | Climate characteristics in turn affect the rates of soil formation, erosion and deposition |
| evaporation | water moves from bodies of water and moist soil into the atmosphere by evaporation |
| transpiration | water also enters the atmosphere by transpiration |
| precipitation | Water returns from the atmosphere to Earth's surface as precipitation such as rain or snow |
| condensation | Precipitation occurs when water vapor undergoes condensation |
| aquifer | Are layers of rock and soil that hold groundwater, fresh water found underground |
| groundwater | fresh water found underground |
| Law of conservation of matter | Matter may be transformed from one type to another, but it can not be created or destroyed |
| nutrient | Are mater that organisms require for their life processes organisms need several dozen nutrients |
| biogeochemical cycle | Nutrients circulate endlessly throughout the environment in complex cycles called |
| primary producer | Are organisms including plants and algae, that produce their own food |
| photosynthesis | producers pull carbon dioxide out of their environment and combine it with water in the presence |
| consumer | are organisms, mainly animals, that must eat other organisms to obtain nutrients |
| decomposer | are organisms such as bacteria and fungi that break down wastes and dead organisms |
| cellular respiration | Is the process by which organisms use oxygen to release the chemical energy of Sugers and release CO and water |
| eutrophication | The addition of phosphorus to bodies of water can lead to an overgrowth of producers in a process |
| nitrogen fixation | Is the conversion of nitrogen gas into ammonia |
