Directional Terms

Anterior Toward the front of the body
Posterior Toward the back of the body
Superior Close to the head
Inferior Away from the head
Medial Closer to the body's midline
Lateral Away from the body's midline
Proximal Closer to the trunk
Distal Away from the trunk
Coronal/Frontal Plane Longitudinal plane through a body (divides into anterior and posterior portions)
Sagittal Plane Longitudinal plane thru a body (divides into left/right sections)
Axial//Transverse Plane Horizontal plane thru a body (divides body or parts into upper and lower parts)
Dorsal Cavity Includes Cranial cavity, and vertebral cavity
Ventral Cavity Includes thoracic cavity, abdominal cavity, and pelvic cavity
Cranial Cavity Contains the brain
Thoracic Cavity Contains the lungs, heart, blood vessels, thymus gland, and breast tissue
Pelvic Cavity Contains the bladder, large intestine, rectum, and and reproductive organs
Abdominal Cavity Contains the stomach, gallbladder, liver, colon, small intestine, kidneys and appendix
