QuestionAnswer
Anterior- toward the front of the body
posterior- toward the back of the body
superior- close to the head (ears superior to shoulders)
inferior- away from the head (feet inferior to hands)
medial- closer to body's mid-line (arms medial to ears)
lateral- away from body's mid-line (arms lateral to chest)
proximal- closer to the trunk (knee proximal to ankle)
distal- away from trunk (knee distal to hip)
coronal/frontal plane divides anterior and posterior portions
sagittal plane divides into right & left sections
axial/transverse plane- divides the body, or any of its parts into upper and lower parts.
dorsal cavity- cranial and vertebral cavities
ventral cavity- thoracic and abdominopelvic cavity
cranial cavity- contains the brain
vertebral cavity- contains the spinal column
thoracic cavity- lungs, hearts, blood vessels, thymus gland, and breast tissue
pelvic cavity- bladder, large intestine, rectum, and reproductive organs
abdominal cavity- stomach, gallbladder, liver, colon, small intestine, kidney and appendix
