| aphonia (ay-FOH-nee-uh) | lacking the ability to produce sound; having no voice |
| apnea (AP-nee-uh) | the absence of breathing |
| bradypnea (BRAYD-ip-NEE-uh or BRAD-ip-NEE-uh) | slow respirations |
| bronchitis (brahn-KYT-is) | an irritation and inflammation of the lining of the bronchi |
| dysphonia (dis-FOH-nee-uh) | a condition in which speaking is difficult, causing the voice to sound hoarse or weak |
| dyspnea (DISP-nee-uh) | difficulty breathing |
| empyema (em-py-EE-muh) | a condition in which there is pus inside a body cavity; often refers to the pleural space; also called pyothorax |
| eupnea (yoop-NEE-ah) | normal respirations |
| hypercapnia (hy-pur-KAP-nee- uh) | a condition of excessive carbon dioxide in the blood |
| hyperpnea (hy-PURP-nee-uh) | breathing that is faster or deeper than usual; may be a result of exercise, pain, illness, medication, anxiety, or high altitude |
| hyperventilation (HY-pur-vent- i-LAY-shun) | abnormally fast and deep breathing that re-sults in a loss of carbon dioxide from the blood (hypocapnia) |
| pulmonary hypertension | hypertension in the pulmonary arteries, which may be genetic or caused by conditions such as heart failure |
| tachypnea (TAK-ip-NEE-uh) | rapid respirations |
| tonsillitis (TAHN-sil-Y-tis) | inflammation of the tonsils |
| endotracheal intubation | the insertion of a tube through the nose or mouth and into the respiratory tract to maintain or pro-mote breathing |
| lobectomy | the surgical removal of the larynx |
| sinuplasty | the surgical repair of the sinuses |
| spirometry | the measurement of a person's breathing, including how much air enters and leaves the lungs |
| tracheostomy | a surgically created opening throungh the neck into the trachea |
| ARDS | acute respiratory distress syndrome |
| C and S | culture and sensitivity (a test to identify microorganisms in a specimen) |
| Tdap | tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (older children and adults) |
