Directional Terms

it will have the term and the definition of anterior posterior and superiomplane

TermDefinition
Anterior front-facing—for example, the chest is anterior to the spine.
Posterior back side of the body. For example, the spine is posterior to the chest.
Superior It refers to a body part that is closer to the head or higher up than another part.
Inferior a body part that is farther from the head or lower down than another part.
Medial It refers to a position closer to the center of the body.
Lateral a position farther from the center of the body.
Proximal a part that is nearer to where a limb attaches to the body.
Distal a part that is farther away from where a limb attaches to the body.
Coronal/Frontal plane It runs side to side, slicing the body into front and back halves.
Sagittal plane It runs front to back, slicing the body into right and left halves. If it divides the body exactly down the middle, it’s called the midsagittal or median plane.
Axial/Transverse plane It runs parallel to the ground, slicing the body into top and bottom halves. Think of it like a tabletop passing through your waist.
Dorsal Cavity (cavities it includes) Dorsal Cavity is one of the two major body cavities and is located along the back (posterior) side of the body. Cranial Cavity Spinal Cavity
Vertral Cavity (cavities it includes) Ventral Cavity is the major body cavity located on the front (anterior) side of the body. It houses many vital organs and is divided into several compartments.Contains the heart and lungs Protected by the rib cage
Thoracic Cavity (organs it includes) Thoracic Cavity is the upper portion of the ventral body cavity, located in the chest and enclosed by the rib cage.Heart – housed within the pericardial cavity Lungs – each within a pleural cavity
