Directional Terminol

TermDefinition
Anterior toward the front of the body
Posterior toward the back of the body
Superior close to the head
Inferior away from the head
Medial closer to the body's midline
lateral away from the body's midline
Proximal CLoser to the trunk
Distal away from the trunk
Coronal/Frontal plane Longitudinal plane through a body (dividing front and back)
Sagittal plane Longitudinal plane through a body (middle diving left and right)
Axial/Transverse plane Horizontal plane through a body (divides the upper and lower)
Dorsal cavity consist of cranial cavity, contains the brain
Vertebral cavity Contains the spinal column
Cranial Cavity Consist of cranial cavity and verteblar cavity
Thoracic cavity contains the lungs, hearts, blood vessels, thymus gland, and breath tissues
Pelvic cavity contains the bladder, large intestine, rectum, and reproductive organs
Abdominal cavity contains the stomach, gallbladder, liver, colon, small intestine, kidneys, and appendix
ventral cavity consist of thoracic cavity, abdominal cavity, and pelvic cavity
