Unit 3 Revolution

Revolutionary War

TermDefinition
Revolution A forcible overthrow of a government or social order, in favor of a new system.
American Revolution The war of 1775–1783 in which 13 British colonies in North America broke free from British rule and became the United States of America.
Partisan Warfare A militia of civilians fighting for a common cause (not organized military).
Guerrilla Warfare A type of warfare in which non-conventional fighting methods (surprise hit and run tactics) are used against conventional military organizations.
Red Coat British Soldier
Tyranny Cruel or oppressive government rule.
Treason The crime of betraying one's country, especially by attempting to kill the sovereign (those in charge) or overthrow the government.
Loyalist An American colonist who supported the British side during the American Revolution (Patriots called them Tories).
Patriot An American Colonist who supported the fight for Independence from Great Britain during the American Revolution.
Analyze examine the structure of something for the purpose of explanation and interpretation.
Inquiry an act of asking for information.
Investigate a systematic or formal inquiry to examine the facts of (an incident, allegation, etc.) so as to establish the truth.
Summarize give a brief statement of the main points of (something).
Describe a given account in words of (someone or something), including all the relevant characteristics, qualities, or events.
