Drug Utilization Evautation A process that ensures prescribed drugs are used correctly.
Ethics The values and morals used within a profession.
HIPAA Federal act that protects patient rights and makes standards for health care communications.
Legend Drug Drug that requires prescription for dispensing.
Medicaid State operated insurance program that covers health care costs and medicine for low-income families.
Medicare State operated insurance program that covers health care costs and medicine for people older than 65.
Misbranding Labeling of a product that is false or misleading.
Monograph Comprehensive information on a medication's actions within that class.
Morals Standards concerning to what is right and wrong in human behavior.
Narcotic A term used to describe a drug that relieves pain.
National Drug Code A ten-digit code that indicates a specific drug.
National Formulary A book of standards for pharmaceuticals and preparations.
Negligence A legal concept that describes an action taken without thought that should have been taken.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration US managed agency that oversees safety in a work place.
Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1990 Congressional act that changed reimbursement limits and mandated drug use evaluation.
Over The Counter Describes medication that can be purchased without a prescription.
Physicians' Desk Reference One of many reference books on medication.
Pregnancy Categories A system used by the FDA to describe five levels of assessment of fetal effects caused by a drug.
Protected Health Information A term used to describe a patients personal health data.
Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 Act which leads the creation of the FDA and was enacted to prevent mislabeling medication.
Safety Data Sheet A document providing chemical product information.
The Joint Commission An independent nonprofit organization that accredits hospitals and other healthcare organizations.
Tort An act that causes harm or injury to a person intentionally or because of negligence.
United States Pharmacopeia An independent nonprofit organization that establishes documentation on product quality standards.
United States Pharmacopeia-National Formulary A publication of the USP that contains standards for medication.
US Drug Enforcement Administration Federal agency within the US department of justice that enforces US laws.
US Food and Drug Administration The agency within the US department of health and human services that is responsible for ensuring safety.
