Literary Devices
| Question | Answer |

| Setting | When and where a story takes place. (Time and location). |
| Characterization | Character description - including character speech, thoughts/feelings, effect on others, actions, and physical appearance - that reveals traits. |
| Mood | How the text makes you feel while reading. |
| Euphemism | A nicer, more polite word/phrase that replaces one thought to be too harsh, mean, offensive, or inappropriate. |
| Central Idea | A life lesson that a story teaches you. |
| Theme | A one-word subject/topic of a story. Often an abstract noun (e.g. love, courage, resilience, freedom). |
| Simile | A comparison between two things using key words: "like," "as," or "than." |
| Metaphor | A comparison between two things without using any key words. |
| Personification | When a non-human thing (object, animal, etc.) is given human abilities, emotions, etc. |
| Hyperbole | An extreme exaggeration |
