| Silk Road | A network of historical trade routes from Europe connecting east Asia with the Mediterranean Sea. |
| Astrolabe | An instrument that was formerly used for taking astronomical measurements of the sun or stars. |
| Caravel | A small, fast Spanish or Portuguese sailing ship of the 15th–17th centuries. |
| Navigator | A person who directs the route or course of a ship, aircraft, or other form of transportation, especially by using instruments and maps. |
| Cartographer | A person who draws or produces maps. |
| Circumnavigate | The complete navigation around an entire island, continent, or the world. |
| Isthmus | A narrow strip of land connecting two bodies of water. |
| Conquistador | One who conquers, specifically a leader in the Spanish conquest of America and especially of Mexico and Peru in the 16th century. |
| Mutiny | Open rebellion against authority. Seize control of a ship from the captain. |
| Expedition | A journey or voyage undertaken by a group of people with a particular purpose, especially that of exploration, scientific research, or war. |
| Northwest Passage | A water passage through North America to Asia connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific ocean. |
| Scurvy | A disease caused by a lack of vitamin C, characterized by swollen bleeding gums and the opening of previously healed wounds. |
| Marco Polo | Traveled the Silk Road and described his journeys to Asia, sparking European interest in the East. |
| Bartholomeu Dias | First European to sail around the southern tip of Africa, opening a sea route to Asia. |
