TermDefinition
Silk Road A network of historical trade routes from Europe connecting east Asia with the Mediterranean Sea.
Astrolabe An instrument that was formerly used for taking astronomical measurements of the sun or stars.
Caravel A small, fast Spanish or Portuguese sailing ship of the 15th–17th centuries.
Navigator A person who directs the route or course of a ship, aircraft, or other form of transportation, especially by using instruments and maps.
Cartographer A person who draws or produces maps.
Circumnavigate The complete navigation around an entire island, continent, or the world.
Isthmus A narrow strip of land connecting two bodies of water.
Conquistador One who conquers, specifically a leader in the Spanish conquest of America and especially of Mexico and Peru in the 16th century.
Mutiny Open rebellion against authority. Seize control of a ship from the captain.
Expedition A journey or voyage undertaken by a group of people with a particular purpose, especially that of exploration, scientific research, or war.
Northwest Passage A water passage through North America to Asia connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific ocean.
Scurvy A disease caused by a lack of vitamin C, characterized by swollen bleeding gums and the opening of previously healed wounds.
Marco Polo Traveled the Silk Road and described his journeys to Asia, sparking European interest in the East.
Bartholomeu Dias First European to sail around the southern tip of Africa, opening a sea route to Asia.
Christopher Columbus Completed four voyages across the Atlantic and is credited with opening the Americas to European exploration.
Vasco da Gama First European to reach India by sea, linking Europe and Asia via the Cape of Good Hope.
Amerigo Vespucci Demonstrated that the Americas were separate continents from Asia, giving them their name.
John Cabot Explored the coast of Newfoundland, claiming land in Canada for England.
Vasco Núñez de Balboa First European to see the Pacific Ocean from the Americas.
Juan Ponce de León Explored Florida and was associated with the legend of the Fountain of Youth.
Ferdinand Magellan Led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe, proving the Earth could be fully circled by sea.
Hernán Cortés Conquered the Aztec Empire in Mexico for Spain.
Francisco Pizarro Defeated the Inca Empire in Peru and claimed it for Spain.
Henry Hudson Explored the Hudson River and Hudson Bay while searching for a Northwest Passage.
Samuel de Champlain Founded Quebec and mapped much of northeastern North America.
Francisco Coronado Explored the American Southwest in search of the legendary Seven Cities of Gold.
