| characteristcs of hypodermis: | Bind the skin to the underlying muscles and bones in the body. Insulate the body from heat loss or gain from fat |
| why is the skin part of the immune system: | As a protective barrier between organs and the environment, the skin encounters a host of toxins, pathogenic organisms, etc. To protect from these things, the skin functions as more than a physical barrier: it is an active immune organ. |
