|---|---|
| atom | the smallest particle of an element that retains all the properties of that element |
| nucleus | location of protons and neutrons in a atom |
| protons | positively charged particles in the nucleus, also the atomic number on the periodic table |
| neutrons | neutral particles in the nucleus of atoms |
| quarks | small particles that make up protons and neutrons |
| electron cloud model | the most accurate and current model of the atom |
| Bohr model | a useful model of the atom that shows electrons in rings or energy shells around the nucleus |
| atomic mass number | the sum of protons and neutrons located in the nucleus of an atom |
| atomic number | the number of protons in an atom |
| isotope | atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons and thus different masses |
| ion | an atom that has lost or gained electrons and now has a positive or negative charge |
| period | a row on the periodic table |
| group | a column on the periodic table |
| metals | elements located in groups 1 and 2 on the periodic table |
| transition metals | elements located in the center of the periodic table |
| non metals | elements located on the far right side of the periodic table, including the noble gasses and hydrogen |
| metalloids | elements located between the transition metals and non metals along the zig-zag line on the periodic table |
| energy levels | locations occupied by electrons in the electron cloud |
| valence electrons | the electrons located in the outer most energy level |
