General anatomy

Macroscopic anatomy/Gross anatomy The study of large body structures visible to the naked eye
Microscopic anatomy The study of body structures not able to be seen with the naked eye, such as cells and tissues
Regional anatomy Looks at a specific region of the body, can contain multiple systems
Systemic anatomy Looks at a specific system
Anatomy The study of the structure and shape of the body
Physiology The study of the functions of the body, usually to maintain homeostasis
Homeostasis The state of having a stable internal environment
Cell The smallest unit of matter still retaining chemical properties
Integumentary system Provides protection to internal structures and contains many sensory receptors
Skeletal system Provides support and movement
Muscular system Provides movement and helps maintain body temperature
Nervous system Detects and processes sensory information and activates bodily functions in response
Endocrine system Secretes hormones and regulates bodily processes
Cardiovascular system Delivers oxygen and nutrients to tissues and equalizes body temperature
Lymphatic system Returns fluid to blood and defends against pathogens
Respiratory system Removes carbon dioxide and delivers oxygen to blood
Digestive system Processes food and removes waste
Urinary system Controls water balance and removes wastes from blood
Reproductive system Produces sex hormones and gametes, female: supports embryo/fetus and produces milk
Organism Living being with a cellular structure that can independently perform all functions necessary for life
Stimuli A thing or event that provokes a specific functional response in an organ or tissue
Anabolism Smaller molecules are combined into more complex substances
Catabolism Complex molecules are broken down into smaller molecules to release energy
Metabolism The combination of all anabolic and catabolic reactions that take place in the body
