CELL CYCLE, MITOSIS

QuestionAnswer
What is the cell cycle The sequence of growth, DNA replication, and division that a cell goes through.
What are the two main parts of the cell cycle Interphase and M phase (mitosis + cytokinesis).
What happens during interphase The cell grows, DNA is replicated, and the cell prepares for division.
What are the three phases of interphase G1, S, and G2.
What happens during G1 Cell growth and normal functions.
What happens during S phase DNA replication.
What happens during G2 Cell prepares for mitosis by making organelles and proteins.
What are cell cycle checkpoints Control points (G1, G2, M) that regulate cell growth and division.
What is mitosis Division of the nucleus into two genetically identical daughter nuclei.
What is cytokinesis Division of the cytoplasm into two daughter cells.
List the four phases of mitosis in order. Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase.
What happens in prophase Chromosomes condense, spindle fibers form, and nuclear envelope breaks down.
What happens in metaphase Chromosomes line up at the equator of the cell.
What happens in anaphase Sister chromatids are pulled apart to opposite poles.
What happens in telophase Nuclear membranes reform and chromosomes uncoil.
How is cytokinesis different in plant and animal cells Animal cells form a cleavage furrow; plant cells form a cell plate.
Why is mitosis important It allows for growth, repair, and asexual reproduction.
What is asexual reproduction Process where a single parent produces identical offspring.
What is sexual reproduction Process where two parents produce genetically unique offspring.
What is an advantage of asexual reproduction It is fast and produces many offspring.
What is a disadvantage of asexual reproduction No genetic variation.
What is an advantage of sexual reproduction Genetic variation that increases survival in changing environments.
What is a disadvantage of sexual reproduction It is slower and requires two parents.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
