What is Jerusalem’s Importance to the Christian, Muslim, & Jewish Religions? Jerusalem was, and still is, a sacred city to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. • For Jews, it was the spiritual capital and had been the political capital and site of their great Temple in ancient times • For Christians, Jerusalem is where Jesus was crucified and rose from the dead • For Muslims, Jerusalem is where Muhammad ascended to heaven on his Night Journey
What were the Crusades? The crusades werre a series of religious wars. Their goal was to reclaim and protect sacred Christian sites in the Holy Land, especially Jerusalem.
Why were Christians in Europe concerned about the Seljuk Turks? They feared for the safety and property of Christian communities in the east. • They worried about the loss of control over the Holy Land, especially the city of Jerusalem • In Jerusalem, Christians and their holy sites were sometimes treated with intolerance
What are some economic changes brought about by the Crusades? The need for supplies led to increased use of money in Europe. • Some knights performed banking tasks, such as making loans or investments • To fund the Crusades, Monarchs established tax systems Social and Political Effects
