| sneered | to give a scornful or mocking smile, remark, or tone |
| reviled | criticized in an abusive or angrily insulting manner |
| scrupulous | full of moral integrity; extremely attentive to detail |
| evident | plain or obvious; clearly seen or understood |
| bewail | to express great regret, disappointment, or sadness over something |
| be- | (1) to cause to be; (2) completely or thoroughly; (3) over, on, around |
| perilous | full of great danger or terrible risk |
| -ent | a suffix that means "being in a state or condition" |
