Earth Systems

Unit 10

TermDefinition
Earth Systems all of the non living things and living things and processes that make up the planet earth including the solid earth.
Geosphere the mostly solid rocky part of the earth extends from the center
hydrosphere hydrosphere is the watery part of the earth
cryosphere cryosphere is all the living things on earth
atmosphere a atmosphere is the rocks or grass and the earth we are living on.
biosphere biosphere is all nonlivng things
energy budget it is a way of keeping energy transfers
Air pressure it is a measure of a force that the air is pushing on
thermosphere is the coolest of hotness area of a place
mesosphere the strong, lower part of the mantle between the asthenosphere and the outer core
stratosphere the layer of the atmosphere that lies between the troposphere and the mesosphere
troposphere the lowest layer of the atmosphere, inwhich temperature drops at a constant rate as altitude increases; the part of the atmosphere
ozone layer the layer of the atmosphere at an altitude of 15 to 40 km
greenhouse effect the warming of the surface and lower atmosphere of Earth that occurs
temperature the weather outside for thar one day or for the whole week
thermal energy thermal energy is the hot energy that is hot like a stove top
thermal expansion it is when something is hot like a basketball and when it gets hot it fills up with air
heat the temperature in a certain area
radiation radiation is from like a x-ray and maybe a light in a roof maybe
convection the movement of matter due to differences in density that are caused by temperature
conduction the transfer of energy as heat through a material
wind the breeze out ur mouth or the air out side
Coriolis effect the curvingof the path of a moving object from an otherwise straight path due to Earth’s rotation
global wind the movement of air over Earth’s surface in patterms that are worldwide
jet stream a narrow band of strong winds that blow in the upper troposphere
local wind the movement of air over short distances; occurs in specific areas as a result of certain geographical features
ocean current a movement of ocean water that follows a regular pattern
surface current a horizontal movement of ocean water that is caused by wind and that occurs at or near the ocean’s surface
deep current a streamlike movement of ocean water far below the surface
convection current any movement of matter that results from differences in density; may be vertical, circular, or cyclical
upwelling the movement of deep, cold, and nutrient- rich water to the surface

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
