Short Story Lit Terms

| Antagonist | The villain or force working against the protagonist. |
| Characters | People, animals or imaginary characters that take part in the story. |
| Climax | The turning point; most exciting part of the story. |
| Conflict | The problem in the story; a struggle between two opposing forces. |
| Exposition | Sets the stage, the setting and introduction of characters. |
| External Conflict | A visible problem; it is outside the mind of the character. |
| Falling Action | The few events leading the resolution. |
| Fiction | Writing that comes from the author's imagination. |
| First Person | Narrator is a character, uses I, me, and we. |
| Flashback | A scene that interrupts the present action to describe an event that took place at an earlier time. |
| Foreshadowing | Hints that suggest event to come. |
| Genre | A kind of literature that has a common set of characteristics. There are four main types. |
| Internal Conflict | A problem that cannot be seen; usually in the mind of the character. |
| Main Character | Most important person(s) or animal(s) in the story. |
| Minor Character | These characters play a less important role in the story. |
| Place | A location real or imaginary. |
| Plot | All the action in the story. Sequence of events what, when, to whom something happened. |
| Point of View | Perspective from which the story is told. |
| Protagonist | Hero or main character in the story. |
| Resolution | Loose ends are tied up and story comes to a close. |
| Rising Action | Events leading to the climax. |
| Setting | When and where the story takes place. |
| Theme | Message about life or human nature communicated in the story; usually inferred. |
| Third Person Limited | Narrator sees only into one characters mind. |
| Third Person Omniscient | Narrator is all knowing and can see in all the characters' minds. |
| Time | Past, present, future, day, or night. |
