TermDefinition
Vision is the ability to see
Vision a process where the eyes and brain work together
Vision the process uses light reflecting off objects
Cornea is the clear, outermost layer of the eye
Cornea it acts like a window letting light into the eye and begins the process of focusing
Pupil is the opening in the center of the iris
Pupil it regulates how much light enters the eye: in bright light it constricts, in dim light it dilates
Iris the colored part of the eye that acts like a camera shutter by controlling its size
Iris in bright light, the __ makes the pupil smaller to reduce light entry and in dim light, it makes the pupil larger to let in more light
Lens a transparent, flexible structure located just behind the iris and pupil. Its main job is to focus light onto the retina at the back of the eye
Lens changes it shapes to keep vision clear
Accomodation reflex the process where the lens changes its shape to keep vision clear
Retina is a thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye that functions like a camera sensor.
Retina contains about 130 million light sensitive cells that capture light and convert it into electrical signals, which are then sent to the brain for image processing
Macula the cones in this part of the retina are essential for seeing colors and finer details and allows you to do things like read, see faces and drive
Peripheral retina it allows you to see to the side when you're looking straid ahead and the rods in this part of the retina also help you see in low light
Optical nerve is comprised of millions of nerve fibers that send visual images to your brain to help you see.
Pupil reflexes automatically adjust the pupils to control light intake
Accomodation reflex adjust the eyes lens shape to focus on object
Circadian rhythm signal light levels to the brain, helping regulate sleep/wake cycles, blood pressure, body temperature and blood sugar
the Brain your eyes only capture but its __ that turns those signals into images you perceive
Visual cortex processes these signals so that we perceive the world as upright
Recognition and Interpretation it is the final stage of visual processing

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
