| Ode | A formal lyrical poem celebrating or dedicating something with specific intent |
| Lyric | A personal piece of poetry that tends to be shorter, melodic, and contemplative |
| Elegy | A mournful poem, often lamenting the dead |
| Limerick | A humorous 5-line poem with a specific rhythm |
| Ballad | Often a narrative poem set to music |
| Stanza | A group of line sets off by blank lines or indentation |
| Verse | Stanzas with no set number of lines |
| Canto | A stanza pattern found in medieval and modern long poetry |
| Iamb | One unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable |
| Trochee | One stressed syllable followed by an unstressed syllable |
| Dactyl | One stressed syllable followed by two unstressed syllables |
| Anapest | Two unstressed syllables followed by one unstressed syllable |
| End Rhyme | A common type of rhyme in poetry that occurs when the last word of two or more lines rhyme |
| Imperfect Rhyme | A type of rhyme that occurs in words that do not have an identical sound |
| Internal Rhyme | Rhymes that occur in the middle of lines in poetry |
| AAA (Monorhyme) | All lines in the stanza rhyme |
| AABB (Couplet) | Consecutive pairs of lines rhyme |
| ABAB (Alternate Rhyme) | The first and third lines rhyme, as do the second and fourth |
| Speaker | One who narrates the poem |
| Metaphor | A comparison without using "like" or "as" |

| Consonance | The repetition of a consonant sounds within a group of words |
| Euphemism | An indirect expression used to replace something that is deemed crude |
| Poetic Elements | The building blocks of poetry that create meaning, musicality, and emotional impact |
| Exact Rhyme | Occurs when the writer uses the same stressed vowel or consonant sounds |
| Allegory | A narrative found in verse and prose in which a character or event is used to speak about a broader theme |
