TermDefinition
Real Numbers Any number you can find on a number line
Order Putting things into their correct place following some rule
Convert To change something into another thing
Decimal A number that uses a decimal point with numbers behind it
Fraction One part of a bigger thing or number
Square Root A square root of a number is a number that, when multiplied by itself, gives the number
Situation An event/ moment that you are in
Positive Number A number greater than (bigger than) 0
Negative Number A number less than (smaller than) 0
Represent To be a sign for something or talk/ act in the place of something
Isolate To separate something from something else
Variable Something that can be changed in a situation.
Inverse The opposite operation or action
Operation A mathematical process.The most common are add, subtract, multiply and divide (+, −, ×, ÷).
Solution The answer to a problem
Simplify To make something less complicated and easier to do or understand/smaller
Diagonal a line that goes from one corner to another.
Distance A measurement from one point to another.
Base The bottom line of a shape OR the surface a solid object stands on.
Length How long/ far something is
Model Something that is made to be like another thing usually to a smaller scale
Figure A shape or a number that is used as a model
Expression Numbers, symbols and operators (+, −, ×, ÷, etc) put together to represent a value.
Leg A leg of a triangle is one of its sides. For a right triangle, the legs make up the right angle.
Linear Equation A linear equation is an equation for a straight line. Linear means straight/follows a single path.
Substitution To put in the place of another
Elimination Add or subtract equations, numbers to get rid of a variable.
Slope How steep a line is
Dependent Variable The value that depends on what you put into the function.Also known as the output (what is the final number in the equation)
Independent Variable The variable that changes in a problem also known as the the input (what are you putting into the equation.)
Rate A measure comparing two different quantities, showing how much of one thing there is for a specific amount of another
Reccuring Something that happens over and over again at a specific time, day or with a specific cost.
Initial Something that happens at the beginning or end of something but it happens one time.
Input he number or value that we start with in a function or operation. It’s the value we “put in” to get a result
Output he result we get after applying a rule or operation to an input. It’s what “comes out” after we do the math.
Fee Money that you owe because of a service that was done for you.
Y-Intercept The point where a line or curve crosses the y-axis of a graph.
