| approbation | noun. “approval” a favorable opinion about something or somebody; “official sanction” the official approving, authorizing, or sanctioning of something |
| assuage | transitive verb. “relief” to provide relief from something distressing or painful |
| coalition | noun. “political alliance” a temporary union between two or more groups, especially political parties; “merging entities” the merging of things into one body or mass |
| decadence | noun. “civilization decline” a process of decline or decay in a society, especially in its morals; “state of decline” the condition of a civilization in decline; “immorality” a state of uninhibited immoral self-indulgence |
| elicit | transitive verb. “provoking” to cause or produce something as a reaction or response to a stimulus of some kind; “draw out” to bring something to light or cause something to be disclosed, especially by a process of questioning or research |
| expostulate | intransitive verb. “disagreement” to express disagreement or disapproval, especially when attempting to dissuade somebody from doing something |
| hackneyed | adjective. “plain, ordinary” made commonplace and stale by overuse |
| hiatus | noun. “unexpected gap” a break in something where there should be continuity; “opening” in anatomy, an opening or aperture in an organ |
| innuendo | noun. “hinting improper” an indirect remark or gesture that usually carries a suggestion of impropriety; “interpretation of potential slander” in a legal action, an interpretation of words that are claimed to be libelous where the meaning is not obvious |
| intercede | intransitive verb. “plead for” to plead with somebody in authority on behalf of somebody else, especially somebody who is to be punished for something; “mediate” to attempt to settle a dispute between other people |
| jaded | adjective. “loss of enthusiasm” no longer enthusiastic or excited about things, especially because you have been disappointed by your many experiences of them |
| lurid | adjective. “horrifying” sensational and shocking, with graphic details of horror, devastation, or violence |
| meritorious | adjective. “worthy” deserving honor and recognition |
| petulant | adjective. “sulky” ill-tempered or sulky in a peevish manner |
| prerogative | noun. “privilege in rank” an exclusive privilege or right based on appropriate rank; “individual right or privilege” a privilege or right that allows a particular person or group to give orders to make decisions or judgments; |
| provincial | adjective. “of such” belonging to or coming from a province; “narrow/closed minded” unsophisticated and unwilling to accept new ideas or ways of thinking; “simple” in architecture, a simple and plain decorative style |
| simulate | transitive verb. “reproduce” to reproduce the essential features of something e.g. as an aid to study or training; “fake” to feign or pretend to experience something; “mimic” to mimic or imitate somebody or something |
| transcend | transitive verb. “break limit” to go beyond a limit or range, e.g. of thought or belief; “surpass” to go beyond something in quality or achievement; “independent” to exist above and apart from the material world |
| umbrage | noun. “offense” resentment or annoyance arising from some offense; “shade” something that gives shade e.g. a tree |
| unctuous | adjective. “ingratiating” attempting to charm or convince somebody in an unpleasantly suave, smug, or smooth way; “greasy” resembling or containing oil, fat, or grease |
