Subornation the procuring of another to commit perjury
Sui Juris a person having full social and civil rights
Transcript a written, word-for-word record of what was said in a proceeding
Unlawful Detainer Action a lawsuit brought by a landlord against a tenant to evict the tenant from rental property, usually for nonpayment of rent
Venue the geographic area in which a court has jurisdiction
Warrant court authorization, most often for law enforcement officers, to conduct a search or make an arrest
Appellee party who opposed an appellant's appeal, and who seeks to persuade the appeals court to affirm the district court's decision
Battery crime involving intentional and nonconsensual contact with another person's body or something attached or considered to be a part of them, including clothing or an umbrella
Capital Offense a crime punishable by death
Cause of Action a legal claim
Claim a creditor's assertion of a right to payment from a debtor or the debtor's property
Consortium legal right of one to the company, affection, and service of another
Conviction a judgment of guilt against a criminal defendant
Dedimus the name of a writ to commission private persons to do some act in place of a judge
Dictum nonessential statement in a judicial decision
Discovery procedures used to obtain disclosure of evidence before trial
Ex Post Facto after the fact
Exclusionary Rule doctrine that says evidence obtained in violation of a criminal defendant's constitutional or statutory rights is not admissible at trial
Injunction court order preventing one or more named parties from taking some action
Libel defamation conveyed by sight
Mortgage a conditional conveyance of realty designed to be security for the payment of money and which "dies" upon full payment; a debt; a pledge
Per Curiam for the court
Petty Offense a federal misdemeanor punishable by six months or less in prison
Quitclaim to release a claim; release title to another
Res Judicata when a legal decision is based on precedent, it is based on set laws
Subpoena a command, issued under a court's authority, to a witness to appear and give testimony
U.S. Attorney a lawyer appointed by the president in each judicial district to prosecute and defend cases for the federal government
Unliquidated Claim a claim for which a specific value has not been determined
Verdict the decision of a trial jury or a judge that determines he guilt or innocence of a criminal defendant or that determines the final outcome of a civil case
Writ of Certiorari an order issued by the U.S. Supreme Court directing the lower court to transmit records for a case which it will hear on appeal
Caseload the number of cases handled by a judge or a court
Chattels goods; personal property; non-realty
Citation a reference to legal authorities and precedents to establish a case at law
Consecutive Sentence prison terms for two or more offenses to be served one after the other
Contract an agreement between two or ore people that creates an obligation to do or not to do a particular thing
Default Judgment a judgment awarding a plaintiff the relief sought in the complaint because the defendant has failed to appear in court or otherwise respond to the complaint
Derogate to lessen; to impair; to take away from
Due Process constitutional guarantee that a defendant will receive a fair and impartial trial
Encumbrance a claim; a liability; a lien
