earth systems

unit 10

TermDefinition
Earth system All of the nonliving things, living things, and processes that make up the planet earth, including the solid earth, the hydrosphere, that atmosphere, and the biosphere
geosphere the mostly solid, rocky part of earth extends from the center of the core to the surface of the crust.
hydrosphere the portion of earth that is mad of water.
cryrosphere one of Earth's spheres where water is in a solid form, including snow cover, floating ice, glaciers, ice caps, ice sheets, and frozen ground permafrost.
atmosphere a mixture of gases that surrounds the planet, moon, or other celestial body.
biosphere the part of earth where life exists includes all of the living organisms on earth
energy budget the net flow of energy into and out of a system
air pressure the measure of force with air molecules push on a surface
theremosphere the uppermost layer of the atmosphere in Wich tempature tempature increases
mesophere the strong lower part of mantele between the asthenosphere ant the outer core
stratosphere the layer of the atmosphere that lies between the troposphere and the mesosophere and in witch temperature increases as altitude increases contains ozone layer.
troposphere the lowest layer of the atmosphere in Wich in witch temperature drops at a constant rate as altitude increases the part of the atmosphere where weather conditions exist
ozone layer the layer of the atmosphere at an altitude of 15 to 40km in witch ozone absorbs ultraviolet solar radiation.
greenhouse effect the warming of the surface and the lower atmosphere of earth that occurs when water vapor carbon dioxide and other gases absorb and reradiated energy
temperature a measure of how hot or cold something is specifically a measure of the avarege kinetic energy of the particles in a object
thermal energy an increase in the size of a substance in response to an increase in the tempature substance.
thermal expansion the energy transfered between objects that are a diffrent tempature
heat the energy transfeered between objects that are at different temputures.
radiation the transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves
convection the movement of matter due to differences in density the transfer of energy due to the movement of matter
coduction the transfer of energy s heat through a metirial
wind the movement of air caused by differences in air pressure
Coriolis effect the curving of the path of a moving object from an otherwise straight path due to Earth's rotation
global wind the movement of air over Earth's surface in patterns that are world wide
jet stream A narrow band o strong winds that blow in the upper troposphere
local wind the movement of air over short distances occurs in specific areas as a result of certain geographical feature
ocean current a movement of ocean water that follows a regular pattern
surface current a movement of ocean water that follows a regular pattern
deep current a stream like movement of ocean water far below the surface
convection current an movement of matter that resaults from difrences in density may be vertical circular cycle
upwelling the movement of deep cold and nutrient rich water to the surface

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
