Weather Water

TermDefinition
Cut Bank Where erosion increases on the outside of a meander because water speeds up
Point Bar Where deposition happens on the inside of a meander because water slows down
Weathering The break down of rocks into smaller pieces called sediment
Erosion When sediment is being moved from where it was weathered from
Deposition When material is deposited after it has been eroded away
4 Factors that influence Water, ice, gravity, wind
Meander A windy curve or bend in a stream/river or road
Delta A deposit of sediment caused by a river/stream entering a larger body of water slowing down the flow of the river water
Alluvial Fan Deposit caused by water slowing as the gradient of a hill or mountain flattens out slowing the water
Gradient How steep or flat a section of land is
Load The amount of sediment carried by a moving river/stream
Discharge Rate The amount of water that a river or stream carries in a given amount of time
Oxbow Lake a U shaped lake formed by the meander of a river being cut off due to deposition
Till Unsorted sediment deposited by glacier ice
Moraine Ridges/piles of Till that are deposited as the glacier moves or melts
Outwash Sediment deposited by meltwater streams flowing from a melting glacier
Esker A long winding ridge of sediment deposited by meltwater streams flowing within, under, or on top of a retreating glacier
Kettle Lake Created when a large group of "dead" glacier ice, detached from retreating glacier , becomes buried in sediment
Erratic A piece of bedrock, ranging from a pebble to a giant bolder, that was transported by a glacier and deposited in a location where that native bedrock is different
Glacier Grooves Bedrock gouged deeply by rock fragments embedded in a glacier
Striation Shallow marks in bedrock

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
