weathering/gravity

weathering water + gravity

QuestionAnswer
weathering the breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces called sediment
erosion when sediment has been moved from where it was weather from
deposition when the material (sediment) is deposited after it has been eroded away
4 factors that influence W.E.D. water, ice, gravity, wind
cut bank where erosion increases on the OUTSIDE of a meander because water speeds up
point bar where deposition happens on the inside of a meander because water slows down
delta a deposit of sediment caused by a river/stream entering a larger body of water and slowing down the flow of the original water
alluvial fan A deposit caused by water slowing as the gradient of a hill or mountain flattens out slowing the water
gradient How steep or flat a section of land is
load The amount of sediment carried by a moving river/stream
discharge rate the amount of water that a river or stream carries in a given time
oxbow lake a crescent or U shaped body of water formed when a meander of a river is cut off from the main channel due to erosion and sediment deposition resulting in a new, shorter river path and abandonment of the curved meander
shoreline the boundary where a body of water meets the land
sea cave an opening in a rock shaped by erosive waves along the shore/coastline
sea arch A coastal feature formed by waves eroding rocky areas that are in the ocean
sea stack A landform consisting of a column of rocks formed by wave erosion which are typically vertically made
beach a landform which consists of loose particles such as rocks, sand, and shells which accumulate along the shoreline of a body of water
wave cut platform A flat surface at the bottom of a cliff which is formed by wave erosion between different tide levels
barrier island A long/narrow body of sand that is parallel the mainland which is separated by a body of water
sand bar A narrow strip of sand (offshore) which is formed due to the deposition of sand by ocean waves
meander a windy curve or bend in a river or road
till a type of unsorted sediment deposited directly by glacial ice
erratic When a glacier moves and deposits a rock/boulder to a new area
moraine A landform which splits or surrounds a glacier with till deposited by a moving glacier
esker A ridge of sediments formed by meltwater flowing near a glacier
glacial glaciers, which are large masses of ice that form on land from compacted snow and flow slowly under their own weight.
grooves A glacial groove is a long, deep channel carved into bedrock by the abrasive action of rocks and sediments trapped at the base of a moving glacier. (large cut)
outwash Deposited sand/gravel which becomes wet from glaciers melting and forming meltwater streams
kettle lake A small body of water that forms in a hole left by a large glacier melting
striation a scratch or groove carved into bedrock by rocks and debris embedded in the base of a moving glacier. (small scrach)
