Ecosystems Vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Energy | The ability to do work or cause change; necessary for living things to grow and function. |
| Ecosystem | A community of living things and their environment where energy and matter move and interact. |
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space; includes all substances that make up living and nonliving things. |
| nutrients | Added to the soil from decomposers that plants absorb through their roots. |
| oxygen | A gas essential for animals and plants; produced by plants during photosynthesis. |
| Carbon Dioxide | A gas that plants breathe in to make food during photosynthesis. |
| Photosynthesis | The process by which plants use sunlight to produce food. |
| Decomposer | Organisms that break down waste and dead material, returning nutrients to the environment. |
| Aquaponics | A system that combines raising fish (aquaculture) with growing plants without soil (hydroponics). |
| Closed System | A system that does not allow the entry or exit of matter or energy from outside. |
| cycle | A series of events that repeat in a predictable pattern. In ecosystems, cycles often refer to processes like the water cycle, carbon cycle, and nutrient cycle. |
| matter | The physical substance that makes up all living and non-living things. Matter is composed of atoms and molecules. |
| organism | A living thing. |
| algae | Simple plants that live in water that produce oxygen. |
| atmosphere | The layer of gases surrounding the Earth, which is essential for life. It provides oxygen for breathing and carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. |
| producer | Organisms, like plants, that make their own food, usually through photosynthesis. |
| product | Something that is made as a result of a process. |
| transport | To carry or move to something else or somewhere else. |
| primary consumer | Also called a herbivore. An organism that eats producers (plants) for energy and matter. |
| secondary consumer | Also called a carnivore or omnivore. An organism that eats primary consumers for energy and matter. |
| food chain | A flow chart that shows the process of how energy and matter flows through an ecosystem. |
| conservation | Energy isn’t created or destroyed. It simply cycles back and forth through an Ecosystem. |
